Effects of Zilpaterol Hydrochloride Supplementation on Growth Performance,Carcass Characteristics and Production Economics of SteersDiffering in Breed Composition
The β–adrenergic agonist zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) affects skeletal muscle growth, but little is known if this response is influenced by differences in genetic background of cattle. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of ZH on growth, carcass characteristics and production economic responses of Angus-sired (ANG) and SimAngus-sired (SIMANG) steers. Pens within each block × breed composition were randomly assigned to either ZH (8.3 ppm of DM; fed for the final 20 d before slaughter) or control (CON; 0 ppm ZH). Steers were ultrasounded before ZH inclusion and following withdrawal to determine the influence of ZH on change in ribeye area (REA), fat thickness and percent intramuscular fat (IMF). Carcass and feedlot performance data were collected and used to determine breed composition and ZH effects on economic responses. The interaction of breed composition × ZH had no influence on measured responses. Breed composition did not influence change in ultrasound measurements during the ZH feeding period or feedlot performance. Carcasses from SIMANG steers had larger REA and improved YG, while ANG steers had increased marbling scores. SimAngus-sired steers produced a greater percentage of YG 2 and a lower percentage of YG 3 carcasses than ANG steers. A greater proportion of ANG carcasses were classified as upper 2/3 Choice while a greater proportion of SIMANG carcasses were included in the lower 1/3 Choice designation. Carcass value per cwt was greater for ANG compared to SIMANG carcasses while other economic responses were similar. Feeding ZH improved ADG, YG, and REA and resulted in increased YG 2 carcasses. Total carcass value was greater for ZH compared to CON. While CON had increased IMF during ZH feeding, this did not manifest into differences in QG. Breed composition influenced carcass grid premiums, but not overall carcass value. Feeding ZH improved carcass value by increasing HCW. Responses among breed composition were as expected for ANG vs SIMANG cattle types. The resultant economic effect was that grid premiums for higher-grading ANG cattle were offset by larger HCW for SIMANG, leading to similar overall carcass values. Finally, the influence of ZH on growth and carcass traits was as expected with increased carcass value being realized through heavier HCW
High-resolution Ce 3d-edge resonant photoemission study of CeNi_2
Resonant photoemission (RPES) at the Ce 3d -> 4f threshold has been performed
for alpha-like compound CeNi_2 with extremely high energy resolution (full
width at half maximum < 0.2 eV) to obtain bulk-sensitive 4f spectral weight.
The on-resonance spectrum shows a sharp resolution-limited peak near the Fermi
energy which can be assigned to the tail of the Kondo resonance. However, the
spin-orbit side band around 0.3 eV binding energy corresponding to the f_{7/2}
peak is washed out, in contrast to the RPES spectrum at the Ce 3d -> 4f RPES
threshold. This is interpreted as due to the different surface sensitivity, and
the bulk-sensitive Ce 3d -> 4f RPES spectra are found to be consistent with
other electron spectroscopy and low energy properties for alpha-like
Ce-transition metal compounds, thus resolves controversy on the interpretation
of Ce compound photoemission. The 4f spectral weight over the whole valence
band can also be fitted fairly well with the Gunnarsson-Schoenhammer
calculation of the single impurity Anderson model, although the detailed
features show some dependence on the hybridization band shape and (possibly) Ce
5d emissions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figur
Structure and Melting of Two-Species Charged Clusters in a Parabolic Trap
We consider a system of charged particles interacting with an unscreened
Coulomb repulsion in a two-dimensional parabolic confining trap. The static
charge on a portion of the particles is twice as large as the charge on the
remaining particles. The particles separate into a shell structure with those
of greater charge situated farther from the center of the trap. As we vary the
ratio of the number of particles of the two species, we find that for certain
configurations, the symmetry of the arrangement of the inner cluster of
singly-charged particles matches the symmetry of the outer ring of
doubly-charged particles. These matching configurations have a higher melting
temperature and a higher thermal threshold for intershell rotation between the
species than the nonmatching configurations.Comment: 4 pages, 6 postscript figure
Angle-resolved photoemission study of USb2: the 5f band structure
Single crystal antiferromagnetic USb2 was studied at 15K by angle-resolved
photoemission with an overall energy resolution of 24 meV. The measurements
unambiguously show the dispersion of extremely narrow bands situated near the
Fermi level. The peak at the Fermi level represents the narrowest feature
observed in 5f-electron photoemission to date. The natural linewidth of the
feature just below the Fermi level is not greater than 10 meV. Normal emission
data indicate a three dimensional aspect to the electronic structure of this
layered material.Comment: 22 pages including figure
Inelastic lifetimes of confined two-component electron systems in semiconductor quantum wire and quantum well structures
We calculate Coulomb scattering lifetimes of electrons in two-subband quantum
wires and in double-layer quantum wells by obtaining the quasiparticle
self-energy within the framework of the random-phase approximation for the
dynamical dielectric function. We show that, in contrast to a single-subband
quantum wire, the scattering rate in a two-subband quantum wire contains
contributions from both particle-hole excitations and plasmon excitations. For
double-layer quantum well structures, we examine individual contributions to
the scattering rate from quasiparticle as well as acoustic and optical plasmon
excitations at different electron densities and layer separations. We find that
the acoustic plasmon contribution in the two-component electron system does not
introduce any qualitatively new correction to the low energy inelastic
lifetime, and, in particular, does not produce the linear energy dependence of
carrier scattering rate as observed in the normal state of high-
superconductors.Comment: 16 pages, RevTeX, 7 figures. Also available at

Bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy of A_2FeMoO_6 double perovskites (A=Sr, Ba)
Electronic structures of Sr_2FeMoO_6 (SFMO) and Ba_2FeMoO_6 (BFMO) double
perovskites have been investigated using the Fe 2p->3d resonant photoemission
spectroscopy (PES) and the Cooper minimum in the Mo 4d photoionization cross
section. The states close to the Fermi level are found to have strongly mixed
Mo-Fe t_{2g} character, suggesting that the Fe valence is far from pure 3+. The
Fe 2p_{3/2} XAS spectra indicate the mixed-valent Fe^{3+}-Fe^{2+}
configurations, and the larger Fe^{2+} component for BFMO than for SFMO,
suggesting a kind of double exchange interaction. The valence-band PES spectra
reveal good agreement with the LSDA+U calculation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy study of electron-doped colossal magnetoresistance manganite: La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 film
The electronic structure of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCeMO) thin film has been
investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption
spectroscopy (XAS). The Ce 3d core-level PES and XAS spectra of LCeMO are very
similar to those of CeO2, indicating that Ce ions are far from being trivalent.
A very weak 4f resonance is observed around the Ce 4d 4f absorption edge,
suggesting that the localized Ce 4f states are almost empty in the ground
state. The Mn 2p XAS spectrum reveals the existence of the Mn(2+) multiplet
feature, confirming the Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) mixed-valent states of Mn ions in LCeMO.
The measured Mn 3d PES/XAS spectra for LCeMO agrees reasonably well with the
calculated Mn 3d PDOS using the LSDA+U method. The LSDA+U calculation predicts
a half-metallic ground state for LCeMO.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
Common variations in estrogen-related genes are associated with severe large-joint osteoarthritis: a multicenter genetic and functional study
OBJECTIVE:
Several lines of evidence suggest that estrogens influence the development of osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to explore the association of two common polymorphisms within the aromatase (CYP19A1) and estrogen receptor (ER) alpha (ESR1) genes with severe OA of the lower limbs.
METHODS:
The rs1062033 (CYP19A1) and rs2234693 (ESR1) single nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped in 5528 individuals (3147 patients with severe hip or knee OA, and 2381 controls) from four centres in Spain and the United Kingdom. Gene expression was measured in femoral bone samples from a group of patients.
RESULTS:
In the global analysis, both polymorphisms were associated with OA, but there was a significant sex interaction. The GG genotype at rs1062033 was associated with an increased risk of knee OA in women [odds ratio (OR) 1.23; P=0.04]. The CC genotype at rs2234693 tended to be associated with reduced OA risk in women (OR 0.76, P=0.028, for knee OA; OR=0.84, P=0.076 for hip OA), but with increased risk of hip OA in men (OR 1.28; P=0.029). Women with unfavourable genotypes at both loci had an OR of 1.61 for knee OA (P=0.006). The rs1062033 genotype associated with higher OA risk was also associated with reduced expression of the aromatase gene in bone.
CONCLUSIONS:
Common genetic variations of the aromatase and ER genes are associated with the risk of severe OA of the large joints of the lower limb in a sex-specific manner. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that estrogen activity may influence the development of large-joint OA
